理事長 写真

This year marks the 126th anniversary of our Society. It was our founding chairman Hidegoro Kanasugi who, on returning from his studies in Europe, made the pioneering move in 1893 (Meiji Year 26) to combine otology, rhinopharyngology and laryngology to create the field of otorhinolaryngology. In other words, Japan is the birthplace of this integrated field.

Otorhinolaryngology is the practice of surgical and internal medicine related to the sensory and motor organs, including the treatment of various ailments affecting persons of all ages, from infants to the elderly. It comprises otology, which covers ailments such as otitis media and problems with hearing and balance, rhinology, which covers sinusitis, allergies, and olfactory concerns, and laryngology, which deals with speech and swallowing. Even internationally designated as "Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery," it is seen in the names of both classes and departments in over half of the Japanese universities.

One characteristic of the field is its many interactions with other disciplines, including surgical/internal medicine pertaining to the airways and esophagus, rehabilitation, dentistry, oral surgery, as well as ophthalmology, plastic surgery, pediatrics, and the cranial nervous system. Accordingly, in order to provide high-quality medical care, the construction of cooperative medical care is very important. Through cooperation, we can enhance our specialized expertise and our value to the field along with contributing to the interests of our patients.

Currently, this is my second term as the Chairperson of this society. The principles of the Oto-Rhino-Laryngological Society of Japan are as follows: "promotion of research including cutting edge medicine," "enhancement of social medical care," "providing reliable medical care," "nurturing human resources," "enhancement of pre- and post-graduate education, including reinforcement of public relations activities," and "reinforcement of the financial foundation: stable and active academic society management." The Oto-Rhino-Laryngological Society of Japan's committee of 22 members vigorously strives to conduct activities while keeping these fundamental principles in mind.

With changes in the articles of incorporation to meet the needs of the society and times, investigations that serve as indicators of the future management of the Society, and developments of launched an own media site to promote publicity and enlightenment activities of the importance of otorhinolaryngology and head and neck surgery, we received a recommendation from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. They endorsed our website as an exemplary model website that is extremely convenient for patients to use. In regard to women's participation, we have increased the number of female doctors in the committee of the Society to approximately 20%.

As for academics, various programs have been organized at academic lectures and at specialist training sessions. We are considering expanding and enhancing the contents, such as providing courses for specialized doctors and training sessions for clinics. The Oto-Rhino-Laryngological Society of Japan currently has 16 related conferences, but we are looking towards the future in advancing the deepening of scholarships, the enhancement of programs, the efficiency of conference management, the consolidation of relevant conferences, and the simultaneous holding of conferences. On the other hand, we propose to start a technology accreditation system to guarantee the quality of medical treatment as a responsibility of the Society. This system would involve the presence of an operation guidance doctor in otology and rhinology. In addition, because of the Soda Foundation, the Oto-Rhino-Laryngological Society of Japan was given an award for creating a system whereby it gives an "Research promotion award, the Oto-Rhino-Laryngological Society of Japan, Inc." to develop future basic research and train young researchers.

The national organization of the medical association (Japan Clinical Otolaryngology Association) has been progressing as planned, beginning with the improvement of regional medical care, as well as various otolaryngology medical treatments. In addition, a system to enhance the convenience of the members has been instituted and is going smoothly. At the same time, we have conducted a broad review of the composition of the board of directors, including the quota for women and medical societies.

In order to create "appealing otorhinolaryngology," emphasis is laid on "the promotion of scholarship, advancement of education, cultivation of human resources, improvement of societal medical care, and speedy reform of the Society's management." With the aim of becoming an even more reliable "ears, nose, throat, head, and neck" surgery department, we shall actively combat various important challenges as a Society, and we sincerely ask for your understanding and cooperation.

Hiroshi Moriyama, MD, PhD
